| Arabic: | خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ | |
| Pickthal: | Createth man from a clot. | |
| Shakir: | He created man from a clot. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: | |
| Ayah: 3 | ||
| Arabic: | اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ | |
| Pickthal: | Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, | |
| Shakir: | Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- | |
| Ayah: 4 | ||
| Arabic: | الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ | |
| Pickthal: | Who teacheth by the pen, | |
| Shakir: | Who taught (to write) with the pen | |
| Yusuf Ali: | He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- | |
| Ayah: 5 | ||
| Arabic: | عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ | |
| Pickthal: | Teacheth man that which he knew not. | |
| Shakir: | Taught man what he knew not. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Taught man that which he knew not. | |
| Ayah: 6 | ||
| Arabic: | كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَى | |
| Pickthal: | Nay, but verily man is rebellious | |
| Shakir: | Nay! man is most surely inordinate, | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Day, but man doth transgress all bounds, | |
| Ayah: 7 | ||
| Arabic: | أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَى | |
| Pickthal: | That he thinketh himself independent! | |
| Shakir: | Because he sees himself free from want. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. | |
| Ayah: 8 | ||
| Arabic: | إِنَّ إِلَى رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَى | |
| Pickthal: | Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. | |
| Shakir: | Surely to your Lord is the return. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). | |
| Ayah: 9 | ||
| Arabic: | أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَى | |
| Pickthal: | Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth | |
| Shakir: | Have you seen him who forbids | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Seest thou one who forbids- | |
| Ayah: 10 | ||
| Arabic: | عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّى | |
| Pickthal: | A slave when he prayeth? | |
| Shakir: | A servant when he prays? | |
| Yusuf Ali: | A votary when he (turns) to pray? | |
| Ayah: 12 | ||
| Arabic: | أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَى | |
| Pickthal: | Or enjoineth piety? | |
| Shakir: | Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Or enjoins Righteousness? | |
| Ayah: 14 | ||
| Arabic: | أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَى | |
| Pickthal: | Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? | |
| Shakir: | Does he not know that Allah does see? | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? | |
| Ayah: 16 | ||
| Arabic: | نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ | |
| Pickthal: | The lying, sinful forelock - | |
| Shakir: | A lying, sinful forehead. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | A lying, sinful forelock! | |
| Ayah: 17 | ||
| Arabic: | فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَه | |
| Pickthal: | Then let him call upon his henchmen! | |
| Shakir: | Then let him summon his council, | |
| Yusuf Ali: | Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): | |
| Ayah: 18 | ||
| Arabic: | سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ | |
| Pickthal: | We will call the guards of hell. | |
| Shakir: | We too would summon the braves of the army. | |
| Yusuf Ali: | We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! | |
